Was there any way for Beowulf to defeat the dragon or was he doomed from the start?

Beowulf was able to defeat the dragon by exploiting a weak spot in its armor. However, he suffered fatal injuries in the process and ultimately died. So, while he was able to defeat the dragon, it led to his own demise.
