Why do some cities have multiple zip codes?

Since the purpose of the zip code is to divide up the national mail delivery into more manageable, easily identified sections, it is convenient for no section to include more than a certain number of addresses. So if a city is very large, it can have more than one zip code, so that any given zip code only has so many addresses connected to it.
