What is uniformiatism?

Uniformitarianism is the principle that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now have always operated in the past, and will continue to operate in the future. It forms the basis for understanding the formation of geological features and processes over long periods of time. It is often contrasted with catastrophism, which suggests that the Earth's features were largely formed by sudden, short-lived events.
