How did Vincent van Gogh die?

On July 27, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. The bullet was deflected off of his rib bones and passed through his chest without doing any damage to his internal organs. Van Gogh was able to walk back to the Auberge Ravoux where two physicians attended him. However, neither physician was able to remove the bullet, so the wound was left untreated. Van Gogh died in the evening, 29 hours after shooting himself.

He was 37 years old when he died.
