What happens at the end of the book The Giver?

The end of the giver is not really given to you... Lowry leaves A LOT of room for interpretation in the book. At the end he is at the top of a hill and he sees the sled and the people are waiting for them and Gabe. Many people have told me what they thought the ending was:

He died as all his memories come rushing back and the people (in heaven) are waiting for him

he has found elsewhere

he is hallucinating

OR all of the above together
