What did people do before X-ray machines were invented?

it would be quite easy to joke about this question but that would be lame. my brother is an x ray technician and in his opinion modern x ray machines are essential though i believe that the way to examine a person if they had broken their legs arms etc would be to ask them if they can move them. then feel for any abnormalities.
