It is very possible to make your own sterile water, the only problem lies in how dirty the water you start out with is and whether or not you need to treat it due to the presence of deadly microbes. The household method to sterilize your water, of course, would be boiling your water. This works well if a crisis happens with your city's sewage system. One method that is pretty good to use is water distillation. This is the process in which clean water is collected through an evaporation process. Since many people who are helping others in underdeveloped areas that don't have clean water by using this method, I would say that it's trustworthy.
