6x4 gator will only move with diff lock on?

Number of possibilities. Hub nuts could be broken on one (or more spindles), leaving the axle shaft free spinning. An output shaft to one of the axles could be broken.
Torque is kinda like water.. it'll take the path of least resistance. Anything which can spin freely provides that path of least resistance.
