How did literature keep history alive in Anglo-saxon England?

The Anglo-Saxon texts brought many poems beautifully written, told tales of heroic journeys and describes battles fought. 'Beowulf', was the best known and long epic poem. They helped to keep the people interests in such vivid tales in a place that was ravaged by war and insufficiency.
