Kmart Canada was sold in 1997 to a group of investors for about $185 million Canadian. As part of the deal, Kmart also retained a one-eighth share.
The investors soon sold Kmart Canada to the world's oldest commercial corporation, the Hudson's Bay Company, for $265 million Canadian.
The Hudson's Bay Company, which owned Zellers, merged Kmart Canada into Zellers. Kmart Canada had 112 stores; Zellers already had 298. An estimated 40 Kmart Canada stores were closed in the process.
