Physically, the Earth has numerous layers. Chemically, however, the solid portion of Earth can be divided into three distinct layers. In order from the surface going down, they are as follows: 1. The Crust--Major chemical constituents are oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. 2. The Mantle--Major chemical constituents are silicon, oxygen, iron, and magnesium. 3. The Core--Mostly iron and nickel.
