On itunes does it cost money if you upload one of your own cds?

no it does not. You start iTunes software.. in settings for music, turn on "sync recently added".. put your CD in the drive (it will autostart and ask if you want to add it to your collection), and add it to your media collection (wait while the program turns it into MP3 format). on the Library (left panel) click on recently added and you will see your CD. Right click on it to down load the cover (free from itunes) if you want. sync the iPod.. listen.
