Do crabs lose their shells

if they find another shell that they like better, they may just change right into it. I'm suggesting if you have a pet hermit crab to get around five shells for each crab try to pick around the size or maybe a little bigger for the shells. also i wouldn't buy painted shells they don't seem to like them very much.
