When where chameleons discovered?

Chameleons were first described in written form by the ancient Greeks, with references dating back to around 300 BC. However, they have likely existed long before that, as they are believed to have evolved in Madagascar and Africa. The diversity of chameleon species was further documented during the Age of Exploration, particularly in the 18th century when European naturalists began to study and classify them more systematically.
