If the question is taken at face value, there is no way to answer it here. The detailed answer(s) are in books and Documentary Films. Ask a local librarian for help. If you want a simpler answer, a lot of important detail will be left out.
WWII actually started in July, 1937 between the Chinese and Japanese. It started in Europe in September, 1939 with Nazi Germany invading Poland. At first, the Nazis were unstoppable. They conquered almost all of Europe and a large chunk of Russia by the end of 1942. The Japanese did a similar job in Asia and the Pacific Islands after bombing Pearl Harbor in December, 1941. By 1943 the Allies had stopped the Axis and started to force them back. The Nazis surrendered first in May, 1945 with Japan giving up in August, 1945 and making it official, with a formal surrender ceremony, in September, 1945.
