What causes a car to splutter?

Sputtering engine may be caused by one or more faulty components. It may be from spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Similar faulty component affecting the air-fuel mixture like a bad oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor or engine temperature sensor.
