The last person who signs to rent that vehicle is responsible for damage. If the car is already damaged from a previous driver, you could be blamed if not noted on your contract. So walk around the vehicle first. Note any scratches or dents and the exact locations, length of scratch, whether the damage has missing paint, etc. Write those damages ON the contract BEFORE you sign the contract. Be sure to check trunk, hood, the door panels, etc. If you notice damage when you get into the car, do not leave the lot. Go back in and ask them to get your contract back out and add those damages-- then both the agent and you should initial the additional damages. If they refuse to initial it, then ask for a Supervisor or manager. Refuse to take a car unless all previous damage is written onto your contract, signed and initialed by the Rental agency employee.
