They are important. Dandelions have evolved over 30 million years. They have been used by humans as a food and a herb. They break up hard earth with the long tap root. They are attractive to bees and butterflies as a source of nectar and pollen. As a herb/food they contain small quantities of sugar, fibre, fat, protein, water, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C & E, calcium, iron and magnesium, sodium and zinc. Japanese horticulturalists grow dandelions. It is an emblem of a town in West Virginia and of the University of Rochester
