How did Richard claim the English Crown?

Richard I, known as Richard the Lionheart, claimed the English Crown in 1189 following the death of his father, Henry II. He was the eldest surviving son and was recognized as the rightful heir. Richard's claim was solidified when he returned from the Third Crusade, where he gained significant fame and support. He was crowned king in Westminster Abbey shortly after his return to England.
