Traditionally, a fire engine contained the water pump and carried the hoses, a fire truck carried the ladders. Today, they are collectively referred to as fire apparatus and perform multiple functions (pump, water tank, fire hose, aerial device, and ground ladders). Fire apparatus may be known as a Quad or Quint with each of the functions making up one of its four (quad) or five (quint) capabilities.
