Washington believed the building of his school from nothing would be a turning point of black and white relations in the south. He felt that by producing a superior product, such as bricks that whites needed, they began to put more value on blacks getting a practical education which would allow them to contribute to the community. Starting from the bottom without anything made their ultimate achievements even greater, just as slaves starting with nothing, built lives for themselves, enhanced rather than diminished by their tragic past.
