How many alderman are in the Chicago city council?

There are currently 50 wards in the Chicago, meaning there should be 50 aldermen (one per ward) in the city council. There are 29 males, and 19 females. Two wards, the 28th and 38th, do not currently have an alderman on record. Ed Smith (ward 28) resigned November 30, 2010.
There are 50 members of that governing body.
