The very first newspaper in Australia was The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser. It was printed by convict printer George Howe, commencing on 5 March 1803, and printed in a shed at the back of Government House. This was the only newspaper in Sydney until William Wentworth, the "currency lad" who first crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813, commenced "The Australian" newspaper in 1854. (This is not the same "Australian" newspaper that exists today.)
