What pardons a turkey from being eaten each year?

That is a good question. John F. Kennedy was the first President to pardon a turkey. I am sure somebody knows why he did that but the significant part is that the first turkeys were pardoned only days before the President was assassinated in Dallas November 22, 1963. President Johnson, Kennedy's Vice-President kept the tradition and it's been a tradition ever since.
