What does the name Ashford mean?

It all dependes where you come from. In Kent in is simply a group of Ash Trees near a Ford. In Devon it is an Ash Tree Enclosure. In Saxon times in Kent, a Ford over the river Ash (or Esh). Another Old English meaning suggest it means Dweller by the Oak Tree ford.
