Why do clouded leopards have long tails?

Clouded leopards move through the trees primarily, and their long tail is used like a balancing stick, they keep it straight and it lets them move quickly and stay on top of their platform. If they start falling, their strong tail muscles wrench to the opposite side quickly, to regain balance.
