Why do people refer to Lite-on DVD-RW Drives as Philips Lite-on Drives...?

Apparently Philips and Lite-On formed a joint venture back in 2007 for the optical drives, the name of which is Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation. So, whether you buy a Philips or a Lite-On nowadays, you are getting the same thing.

Typically not using either company's products (as I prefer either Sony or Samsung optical drives since they seem to be most reliable), I had not heard that they had combined forces at least in this area. Very interesting! Thank you for asking the question.
