Although it is by no means clear what "Romeo and Juliet's time period" might mean (Do we mean Shakespeare's time?), the answer is nevertheless that since the reign of William the Conqueror in England at least the punishment for murder is death. That is no longer true in many places since the twentieth century, but was universal before.
