Why are pigeons called passengers?

The term is derived from the French Word passager, meaning 'to pass by'. When they were around, passenger pigeons flocked in groups of up to 2 billion, spread a up to a mile wide and 300 miles long, sometimes taking hours for the flock to pass by an area.
