When first founded, the colony of Virginia's main crop (and income) was tobacco. John Rolfe (Jamestown) discovered this crop and began shipping it back to England; it was an instant hit. However, not everyone back home liked tobacco. The king eventually took away Virginia's charter, making it into a royal colony that he had supreme control over partially because he distrusted tobacco.

Later on, of course, Virginian plantations grew crops such as rice, indigo, and cotton. So, agriculture was Virginia's main source of income.
