Why is Edward in a hospital in the movie Twilight?

Edward was in the Hospital 3 times:

The first time was when Bella almost got ran over. Edward was in the hospital to check on Bella.

The second time Carlisle and Edward (when he was human) where in a flashback. Carlisle is a doctor and found Edward dying in the hospital from the Spanish influenza.

That's when Carlisle bit Edward.

The third is in the last few minutes of the movie. When Bella was attacked by James she was severly injured and was in the hospital with Renee (Bella's mom) and Edward.

Edward was with Bella waiting until she woke up and was pretending to sleep.
