A woman becomes pregnant when a sperm cell from a male fertilizes an egg cell from her ovary, typically during sexual intercourse. This fertilized egg, now called a zygote, travels to the uterus and implants itself into the uterine lining, where it begins to develop into an embryo. Pregnancy typically lasts about nine months, during which the embryo grows into a fetus. Hormonal changes in the woman's body support the pregnancy and prepare for childbirth.
