The large carnation of flower bouquets (Dianthus caryophyllus) comes from a plant that grows to be about 30 inches (80cm) tall. The straight, strong stems can be 18-24 inches long. The carnation plant needs full sun (at least 6 hours per day), a soil rich in organic matter and well-drained, moist, not wet, soil.
