I believe you can, but it all depends on what store your talking about. if your talking IGA then probably not. If your talking Walmart then probably so!

Most grocery stores have a small section for household needs. You won't find a contractor's hammer there, but they usually sell a 3/4 - size hammer that is great around the house!
