It depends on what species of animal you are talking about, as there are many species with many ways they take care of their young. Mammals, for a start, secrete milk so their young can suckle until they are ready to be weaned; when they are weaned depends on the species. Mice wean their young within days; dogs and cats within a month or so; cows and horses wean their calves and foals within 6 to 10 months; elephants wean their young within several years. All mothers teach their young what to eat and what to expect in their life. Birds care for their eggs until they hatch, then feed and teach their young to eat and learn about life.
