Pork is considered to be unhealthy for several reasons. None of these reasons is provable by science or of concern with modern pork farming methods:

  • In the past pork products were periodically the cause of trichinosis a disease causing digestive upsets and other symptoms. Modern farming methods have eliminated this problem.
  • Pork is also "unhealthy" because of religious dietary restrictions form two parts of the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism and Islam). The reason for this is that their god told them it was so. This unclean nature of pork has no basis in science.
  • Modern urban dwellers see pork as problematic because pigs are dirty (not true), pigs are fat (not true and modern pork is a lean meat, and besides dietary cholesterol is not a cause of body cholesterol levels) and because "everyone knows" pork is unhealthy.
  • Some folk lore about pork indicates that it impedes the athletic ability of people that eat it. No proof of this exists
  • In areas of the world where cannibalism is practiced, people are referred to as "long pig". This association may have turned some Western pork eaters off
