Is ethanol in medicines halal or haram?

Well, i am Muslim and from a Muslims preview it is not haram and for everything there is a proof i remember hearing something from the Quran saying everything that is haram and can be used for good without its sideeffect (in this case the 'drunk' effect) is halal but it shouldn't be taken orally (as it will get the sideeffect working)btw why did you ask?
