I saw a long trail in my yard where the grass had been disturbed and I want to know if it could have been a snake?

If you have snakes in your area, it's possible. Never search for a snake and never, ever, try to kill one. That's how most snakebite victims are bitten. Just keep your eyes open and if you see a snake, avoid it. Wear boots when in long grass and shrubbery. On the other hand, check with the family and see whether someone left the garden hose out on the grass overnight.
