Well, back in the 1900's the radio and telegraph were the only means of communication besides just going to the destination and telling the people.It made a faster way too get things around.
Picture this, it's like the kid at your school (college) that spreads a rumor over thhe whole student body. When something is on the radio it is not only heard by th people in the area but people miles away from the city.
