How do you level up the dragon in drakengard on ps2?

You can't the dragon levels up itself as you get further into the game.you can train your dragon by doing the free expeditions I've been doing the free expeditions for the first chapter and checking the level of my dragon and it has been improving in level as i play the expeditions
