How can you tell the difference between an essay and other genres?

An essay is typically scholarly nonfiction, and will be informative. It will often include citation, and unless it is a personal essay, very rarely use the first person. Other forms of writing, such as fiction, will read like a story and occasionally use first person. Poetry and drama take significantly different forms that an essay or a fiction, and the difference between these forms will be stark and recognizable.
