My I-pod now shows as a unrecognised devise is it corrupted and if so is there a way to get data off it for free?

Nope. Apple's gay like that. DRM keeps iTunes as the only way to move songs through your iPod. If your Ipod ain't getting recognized as the Ipod with your stuff on it, then Itunes will only let you delete everything and start over.
