How was Sega able to gain market share from Nintendo?

Despite aggressive marketing--particularly anti-Nintendo--in the 80s, it wasn't until the introduction of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991 as a direct competitor to Nintendo's Mario character that Sega was able to capture a meaningful amount of the market with its Genesis console.
