Both the Western honey bee that we have in the UK and Europe and the Eastern honey bee that lives in India and eastwards are cavity nesters. Usually they prefer to be a distance off the ground to deter predators.

In the wild that means they would look for a hollow tree or even a small cave in places where suitable trees are scarce. But that also means that man-made cavities could be attractive too: a cosy gap between two walls or in a shed.

Other bees have their own particular preferences. Quite a few of them - some bumble bees and miner bees - like to burrow into the earth, especially if it is very dry. Check out a few of the websites and books available - there are thousands of bees so a short answer is impossible.
