Let us consider a mp3 song, each 4MB of space. A CD has 700MB of free space out of which it is optimal to store upto 698MB. So 698/4=174.5 songs.

Better to go with 170 songs, but a song doesn't need to be exactly 4MB, it would be better to go with 150 songs.

Thank you. Suneel.

This answer is wrong. How many songs you can fit on a CD is dependent on how many minutes the CD will hold. Most CDs these days hold 80 minutes worth of music (it will say on the CD packaging). So, if you're in iTunes, the bottom of the playlist window will display total time, keep it under 1:18:00 (1 hour and 18 minutes) - CDs don't quite hold what they say they will so you have to keep it under the advertised time.

Both the above answers are correct! The amount of songs a CD holds depends on the size of the files (i.e. the way you burn it). Were you to burn an "MP3 Disc" your CD can hold up around 150-170 files, depending on the size of the files. On the other hand, were you to burn an "Audio CD" you're normally able to burn 18-24 songs (i.e. 80 minutes). Again, this difference occurs because of the way the files are copied onto the disc itself.
