The piano was in fact invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in 1698, in Italy.

John Broadwood, to whom it is often attributed, was an English piano maker, but he did not invent the piano. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Broadwood piano company is the oldest existing piano manufacturer. However, the company became involved in piano manufacture after the pianoforte became popular.

The original name itself is 'piano et forte', Italian for "soft and loud".
