Thomas Paine did his literary works at and in the middle of the most turbulent times in the history of America. He lived during 1737-1809 and migrated to America from Britain. Through his spit-fire pamphlets Common Sense and The Crisis Of America he roused the Americans against the colonial British and actively took part in the American Revolution. As Adam Smith said, without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sWord of Washington would have been raised in vain. He is one of the Founding Fathers of The United States of America. Paine was a promoter of free thinking and reason and was the introducer of the principle of guaranteeing a minimum income to all. He stood against Christian dogmas and institutionalized religions, severely criticized Napoleon and was once arrested and imprisoned in France. The Age Of Reason was his most controversial writing.
