Do freshwater fish gain water from or lose water to the environment?

Freshwater Fish gain water from their environment through osmosis, as the concentration of solutes in their bodies is higher than that in the surrounding water. To maintain osmotic balance, they do not drink water but instead produce a large volume of dilute urine to expel excess water. This adaptation allows them to counteract the natural tendency to gain water from their freshwater habitat.
