In 985, Erik the Red established the colony known as Greenland's Eastern Settlement. This settlement was located on the southwestern coast of Greenland and became one of the two main Norse settlements on the island, the other being the Western Settlement. Erik named the land "Greenland" in an attempt to attract settlers, despite its harsh climate and icy landscape. The colony thrived for several centuries before declining in the 15th century.
