One cannot go into ketosis if too many carbohydrates are consumed. Thus, one needs to be able to do two things. The first is how to count to 20. Less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day, and ketosis results. 20 grams of carbs is only around 80 kilocalories or calories to the general public not used to precise jargon. The second is learning to use ketone test strips which detect ketones in the urine and quantify how much, if any, ketosis is occuring.
